Just ordered RE4 a couple of weeks ago and it arrived this morning.
However on both discs on gamecube says it cannot read the discs.

Is it possible that this is a USA version (I live in the UK) and
that usa discs are not compatible with European machines?

I got the game brand new from amazon marketplace from a company
called thebookcommunity. It's uk based and they gave no hint it
wasn't a proper uk version of the game.

My American version states on the back of the case "For sale , rental,
and use only in the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Latin America). I assume
the UK versions should say something similar but with respective UK
areas.

Yes mine says that.

I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure a vendor has to state which
version of the game they're selling, otherwise it comes under false
advertisement.

There are more than a few good places to get cheap PAL versions of
games, try a Google search.

Cheers,
Rob

Well at the amazon uk site it says:
..................................................
Seller: thebookcommunity
Rating:99% positive over the past 12 months (16290 ratings.) 17723
lifetime ratings.
Delivery: In stock. Dispatched from United Kingdom See delivery
rates
Comments: Dispatched from North London; please allow 9-13 working
days for delivery. Prompt and Friendly customer service.
....................................................

So it doesn't explicity state it's the UK version but I assumed
that "thebookcommunity" was a UK company with it being despatched
from North London. But looking at the envelope it came in it seems
that their address is in USA. Nowhere on the amazon site does it
state they are located in the USA.

So I'm very unhappy about this. I've sent this bookcommunity an
email.

Most likely, it will be related to whether you got an NTSC or PAL version of
the game, UK as I understand it uses the PAL as the standard for TV and Game
machine output (since it usually goes to a TV), while the US uses one type
of NTSC and Japan uses a different NTSC standard . Your seller might have
sent you a US version in error, contact them, or Capcom on line support. As
spironical noted the US versions thathe for use ine...etc notice, if yours
does, it's probably mistakenly a US version.

The bookcommunity which is the company I bought it from completely
ignored my emails. However Amazon gave me the money back under
their guarantee scheme.

But neither amazon or the bookcommunity have asked for the game
back. Is there anything I can do to modify my gamecube console in
order for it to recognise the discs?
